PROJECT INSIGHT
Project insight is an innovative leap that aims to bring an end to a common daily life problem. The idea of the project is to automatically adjust the rear view mirrors in your car. Using only one button the driver is able to set the rear view mirrors into their proper position and in that process all the driver has to do is to be seated and wait for a few milliseconds. Project insight essentially is the impact dynamics principle of evolution through innovation applied to car mirrors, bringing a high tech approach to that field.
The function of our design is to make driving easier and safer for the drivers. The current and most commonly used designs of the rear view mirrors allow the user to adjust the mirrors manually assisted with electric motors. This manual adjustment of the mirrors is controlled by an array of buttons or a simple joystick. In the driver’s point of view, this adjustment is done in several trials because driver is obliged to move his body to reach the control buttons of the joystick then get seated again to see whether the adjustment is done correctly. Therefore in both control designs the adjustment of the rear view mirrors is a burden to the driver, which should be done before driving. This extra burden shows the importance of the function of our design. Project Insight promises to remove these complications in the adjustment of the rear view mirrors and proposes a safe and easy driving environment for the driver.
Project Insight is currently on schedule for the delivery of the prototype. This prototype will consist of an experimental rig and a software system responsible for detecting the position of the eyes of the driver and adjusting the mirrors accordingly. As far as the main product is concerned, the experimental rig on which the main body and mirrors reside is not included. Our product will bring only a webcam, a small sensor and control software as additions to a standard car.
THE UNDERLYING TECHNOLOGY
Project Insight utilizes state of the art computer vision technology and face detection algorithms, and utilizes efficient microprocessors and microcontrollers to detect the precise location of the drivers' eyes within milliseconds of the button press and adjust the mirrors without any effort on the side of the user.
