Optimized Lighting Conditions Help Students Improve Performance

A recent study has demonstrated that artificial lighting simulating daylight was able to increase concentration and cognitive performance in students. The so-called “biologically-optimized” lighting used in the study was produced by combining blue and white LEDs.

ZNL and Osram began the field study in November 2011 at the Ferdinand von Steinbeiss School and the Robert Bosch School in Ulm, Germany. In each case, one classroom was fitted with the biologically-optimized light. The students, ranging from 17 to 20 years old, attended classes both in the classroom with the new lighting and also in classrooms with conventional lighting.
The study investigated the effects of light on the performance of students at two schools in Ulm, Germany. It was carried out by the ZNL TransferZentrum für Neurowissenschaften und Lernen (Transfer Centre for Neuroscience and Learning) in conjunction with lighting manufacturer Osram between November 2011 and February 2012.The results showed that students working under biologically-optimized classroom lighting achieved better results than the comparison group in standardized tests for concentration ability, and their performance speed also increased.

During the study, the students had to repeatedly take various standardized performance and concentration tests, such as Brickenkamp’s d2 test of attention (see below for details). The test results were compared for biologically effective light in relation to conventional lighting.

LEDs create artificial daylight

The biologically-optimized lighting was implemented using blue and white LEDs. Osram enhanced an LED light developed by its subsidiary company Siteco.

“In order to create an artificial sky in the classroom, we use strips with blue and white LEDs that can be controlled independently of each other,” said Hannah Helbig, Innovation Manager at Osram. “Therefore, the light colors can be mixed dynamically and reproduce the color temperature of the sky inside the building.”Katrin Hille, head of research at ZNL, who was in charge of the light study, noted the positive effect of the new lighting. “Even though it has been recognized for a long time that light with a specific color temperature and illumination intensity has a positive effect on people’s performance and well-being, the fact that the students with the biologically-optimized lighting had up to a third fewer errors in the concentration test is impressive,” she said.

Benefits for students and teachers

According to the researchers, the biologically-optimized light provides stimulation to the body as if the person was outdoors. This causes the students’ circadian rhythms to shift forward (in time) so that they are alert earlier in the day. The researchers say this can counteract “social jetlag” i.e. tiredness in the mornings frequently observed in young people in particular.

Brickenkamp’s d2 test of attention

Many participants in the study were enthusiastic about the new lighting. “My concentration is actually better,” said one student. “In normal light, however, I sometimes have to keep myself awake in the classroom.”It is not only the students that appreciate the new light – so do the teachers. “Many teachers, even those that were skeptical about the new lighting at the beginning, told me at the end of the study that they are also now feeling better,” said ZNL researcher Oliver Keis, who also worked on the study.

The d2 test is a standardized, more developed version of the cross-out test. It measures the speed and accuracy of a person’s working behavior when differentiating between similar visual stimuli (detail discrimination), so it allows evaluation of their individual performance with regard to attention and concentration.

Product Description: Aviner Sol

Category : Aviner Sol

Aviner Sol is an automated lighting optimizer which keeps the illumination level of the environment it operates at the optimal level for the task that is getting done.It provides the user scientifically proven preset lighting profiles.  In addition to that it is possible for the user to create a customized lighting profile by his choice. Aviner Sol works dynamically. If the sunlight entering the room increases (for example a cloud movements may cause this) the system will dim the lights closer to the window enough or turn them off entirely to keep the light levels constant. The preset lighting levels are defined as “study”, “reading”, “relaxing” and “projection”. Each of these activities is proven to require different levels of lighting. And since our initial target customer is universities and IT companies, we have valued these options at first place. The reason for Bilkent University being one of the initial targets of Aviner is that the university is supportive against entrepreneurship, especially when the entrepreneurs are its own students. We chose Bilkent University, our home, as the first customer to gain market experience and have feedback in a more protected environment than the actual market where things may become hard for newly graduated people like us. Main criteria of our target consumers’ decision of selecting lighting systems are the productivity factor and the energy efficiency that is provided. All of the companies we have researched so far are going with what was presented to them, not making their own specific choices. Our reason for not choosing operators of business centers (i.e. Armada) and large government institutions, hospitals and high schools is that their demands of energy management is too complicated to handle by an inexperienced company. Thus, we have set these institutions as secondary targets since we need to gain more experience to handle the complexity of their needs. Aviner would rather having a broad portfolio of customers until reaching these secondary targeted customers. The lighting level defined as “projection” is created with the thought that could be used on projected presentations in lecture halls and meeting rooms. The version which Aviner will present to construction firms and real estate agencies, “cooking”, “TV” and “romantic” options will be included regarding the possible usage of lighting in households. These option presents an additional value to customers.

Application Preview

Category : From Aviner Staff

Hold on! It is about to finish.

As the controlling of lighting systems are going to be done with a mobile application, this is how our application will look like:

app

Let us explain that how it works.

Our Product, Aviner Sol, gives its user the opportunity to control its functions by a touch based user interface.  The main screen of the application consists of the following information: the number of floor in the building (NAVIBAR on the right side), position of the rooms, position of windows and the position of the light bulbs.

Each room is tappable. When tapped, the interface changes into the zoomed sketch of the room. On that screen, to adjust brightness of the lights manually, user taps on a light bulb and a swipeable bar appears which controls the brightness level of the particular bulb. To confirm the selection of brightness user just needs to click to a blank space.

To set the room’s brightness into a preset function (we think of 3 brightness levels), user may tap on the brightness icon on the right corner of the screen. This button’s effect differs on where it is tapped. If the user taps it when in the main screen, whole floor uses this information. If the user taps this button in the “room” screen, the lights in the room uses this information.

To explain the general function buttons of our system, we shall start with the “back” button. It is always located in the left bottom corner of the application. This button has the properties of going back to the previous screen and also discards changes if the user wants to. For example, if the user decides to increase the brightness in a particular room, swipes the bar and then decides that he wants to cancel this setting, he can press the “back” button located in the left bottom corner to discard the information he inputted. NAVIBAR is designed for houses with multiple floors or buildings that use our product.  It is located in the right side of the screen and the user can tap onto a number to go to the plan of that floor.

Now you have the spoiler, so if you have a comment let us know.
